Where to start?
As most of any home improvement or remodeling, deck construction involves planning and obtaining permits, preparing the site by clearing and leveling the ground, and constructing a strong foundation with footings and posts. The next steps are building the frame with beams and joists, installing the deck boards, and finishing with railings, stairs, and a protective sealant.

2. Build the foundation and frame

Dig and pour footings: Dig post holes to the required depth (often based on your local frost line) and pour concrete, inserting J-bolts while the concrete is wet to anchor the posts.

Install posts: Attach the posts to the J-bolts, making sure they are plumb (perfectly vertical), and secure them with stakes or scrap lumber.

Install ledger board: Securely attach the ledger board to your house's structure, ensuring proper flashing and waterproofing. (This step is skipped for freestanding decks).

Attach beams: Install the main support beams on top of your posts.

Install joists: Attach rim joists to the ends of the beams and then install the inner joists, typically spaced 16 inches on center, using joist hangers for support. Ensure the frame is square by checking that the diagonal measurements are equal.
