Let's Get Started with Your Deck Project!

Where to start?

As most of any home improvement or remodeling, deck construction involves planning and obtaining permits, preparing the site by clearing and leveling the ground, and constructing a strong foundation with footings and posts. The next steps are building the frame with beams and joists, installing the deck boards, and finishing with railings, stairs, and a protective sealant.

1. Plan and prepare

  • Plan and design: Sketch your deck's design, determine its location, and check local building codes.

  • Obtain permits: Apply for and obtain any necessary building permits before you begin.

  • Gather materials and tools: Collect all necessary lumber, hardware, and tools.

  • Prepare the site: Clear the area of any grass or debris, and level the ground.

  • Mark layout: Use batter boards and mason lines to mark the exact locations for your footing holes.

3. Install deck boards and finishing touches

  • Lay deck boards: Start laying your deck boards, leaving a small gap between them for drainage and expansion.

  • Cut and trim: Cut the boards to the correct length and then use a straight edge to trim any overhang for a clean finish.

  • Install railings and stairs: Build and install your deck's railings and stairs according to your plan and local codes.

  • Apply sealant and finish: Sand any rough spots and apply a protective stain or sealant to protect the wood from the elements.

2. Build the foundation and frame

  • Dig and pour footings: Dig post holes to the required depth (often based on your local frost line) and pour concrete, inserting J-bolts while the concrete is wet to anchor the posts.

  • Install posts: Attach the posts to the J-bolts, making sure they are plumb (perfectly vertical), and secure them with stakes or scrap lumber.

  • Install ledger board: Securely attach the ledger board to your house's structure, ensuring proper flashing and waterproofing. (This step is skipped for freestanding decks).

  • Attach beams: Install the main support beams on top of your posts.

  • Install joists: Attach rim joists to the ends of the beams and then install the inner joists, typically spaced 16 inches on center, using joist hangers for support. Ensure the frame is square by checking that the diagonal measurements are equal.

Wood Deck FAQs

How to build a wood deck step by step? - Plan. The first step in installing a deck is to make a plan. - Gather Tools & Materials. - Dig Post Holes. - Pour Concrete and Place Post Anchors. - Attach Posts or Beams to Post Base. - Attach Rim Joists and Angle Brackets. - Attach Inner Joists to Beam Faces. - Install Boards and - Add Fasteners to Joists.

Can I lay decking directly on soil? If you lay it directly on the ground, you may find that it's more susceptible to absorbing moisture and might need additional maintenance. If you're laying your deck straight onto the ground, cover the area with a layer of weed control fabric. Then add 40 mm to 50 mm of gravel on top.

What is the 3 4 5 rule for decks? From the corner, measure out 3 feet along one edge and mark it. Next, measure 4 feet along the edge adjacent to the first measurement and mark it. Measure the length of the diagonal connecting the two marked points. If it's exactly 5 feet, your corner is square

How big can you build a deck without consent? A building consent is not required for decks, platforms, bridges, boardwalks and similar structures where you can't fall more than 1.5 metres.

What is the 30cm rule for decking? Putting up decking, or other raised platforms, in your garden is permitted development, not needing an application for planning permission, providing: The decking is no more than 30cm above the ground.

How far can a deck span without support? The distance a deck can span without support varies significantly based on the materials used, the size of the structural members, and the spacing between them. For example, a wooden joist might span from 6 to 18 feet depending on its size and species, while a metal deck panel can span between 4 and over 12 feet, depending on its gauge and type. Always check local building codes and manufacturer specifications to ensure safety and compliance

Do I need 2x8 or 2x10 joists for my deck? 2x10 joists are generally superior to 2x8 joists because they are stiffer, have a longer maximum span, and are less prone to bouncing, making them the better choice for most decks. While 2x8s are acceptable for certain spans and meet code in many areas, they may feel less sturdy, especially for spans over 10-11 feet. The best choice depends on the specific span, local building codes, lumber type, and your desired level of stiffness

What is the best time of year to build a deck? The best time to build a deck is fall or early spring to take advantage of cooler weather, shorter contractor wait times, and potential savings. Fall offers a good balance of comfortable working conditions and less competition for contractors, while spring allows you to have the project done early so you can enjoy it throughout the warmer month
