Importance of Proper Flooring

Do and Don'ts for Vinyl Flooring

DO'S

  • Wipe up spills immediately to prevent stains.

  • Protect floors with proper furniture pads.

  • Place entrance mats to catch dirt and debris.

DON'TS

  • Don't use abrasive cleaners that can scratch the finish.

  • Never drag furniture across the floor.

  • Avoid using bleach or ammonia-based products.

WHERE CAN WOOD FLOORING BE INSTALLED?

  • Solid wood: Best for installation on or above grade (ground level or upper floors). It is not recommended for below-grade areas like basements, due to moisture risks.

  • Engineered wood: Can be installed on, above, or below grade. Its moisture-resistant construction makes it suitable for areas where solid wood is not recommended.

  • Bathrooms: Neither solid nor engineered wood flooring is recommended in high-moisture areas like bathrooms, as excessive moisture can cause damage.

Design and ordering

  • What should I have ready before I go tile shopping? Gather information on your total square footage, budget, desired tile styles, photos of your space, and fabric or paint swatches. Some designers may also want inspirational photos.

  • How do I create a custom tile mural? You can submit large, high-resolution digital files or physical artwork to a custom tile manufacturer. Many companies can enlarge a single photo or create a mosaic from multiple images.

  • Can I get a sample tile before ordering a mural? Yes, most custom tile companies can provide a sample before you commit to a full mural.

  • What is the lead time for a custom tile order? Since custom tiles are made to order, lead times can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer and the complexity of the project. Some companies, like McIntyre Tile, report lead times of 6–10 weeks.

 Installation

  • How do I prepare the subfloor for tiling? The subfloor must be flat and properly prepared. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) provides guidelines for flatness. Crack isolation or uncoupling membranes are also recommended, especially for large-format tiles and suspended floors.

  • What's the best practice for installing large format tile? For tiles with one edge greater than 15 inches, use a medium-bed mortar and ensure the final embedded mortar thickness exceeds 3/16 inches. Also, follow TCNA guidelines for grout joints and running bond patterns to avoid lippage.

  • Can I tile over painted surfaces? It is generally recommended to remove paint before tiling, as the tile's bond is only as good as the paint's bond to the surface. If the paint is well-adhered, you may be able to clean, roughen, and prime the surface with a bonding primer.

  • What is lippage and how can I prevent it? Lippage is when one tile edge is higher than an adjacent one. You can minimize lippage by ensuring the subfloor is flat and by following TCNA guidelines regarding grout joint widths relative to the tile's facial variation.

Custom Flooring

Care and maintenance

  • How can I make my tile floor last longer? Protecting your tile floor from damage is key. Use area rugs and floor mats in high-traffic areas to prevent scratching. For a custom installation, using a high-quality, name-brand sealer and cleaner can protect your investment.

  • What should I do if a tile is damaged? Custom tiles, and especially complex custom murals, can be hard to replace perfectly. Contact your installer or the tile manufacturer to inquire about ordering a replacement, which may be more straightforward for custom murals than for a floor with a large, intricate pattern.

  • How do I protect myself when installing tile? Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a NIOSH/MSHA approved particulate respirator and safety glasses, when cutting or removing tile to minimize exposure to dust and irritants.

Flooring FAQs

What is the rule of 3 flooring? The "rule of 3" in flooring is a design guideline that suggests using a maximum of three different flooring types throughout an entire home to maintain a cohesive and stylish look. This approach avoids a cluttered appearance and helps ensure consistency, which can also be beneficial for home resale value

What questions should I ask a floor installer? 1. Is your contractor licensed and insured? 2. Do they have references and positive reviews? 3. How long the job should take? 4. Is your installer NWFA certified? 5. What kind of warranty does the installer offer for their work? 6. How will they contain dust and handle clean-up?

What is the difference between solid and engineered wood? Solid wood is one piece of wood, while engineered wood has a solid wood top layer over multiple layers of plywood.

Can wood floors be installed on concrete or in a basement? Yes, wood can be installed over concrete, typically using glue-down or floating methods. Some moisture barriers are recommended, especially for basement installations.

What is acclimation? It's the process of letting wood adjust to the room's humidity and temperature before installation to prevent excessive expansion and contraction after it's installed.

Will my floor change color? Yes, wood floors naturally change color over time due to sunlight and age. It's normal to see some yellowing, darkening, or lightening.

How does humidity affect wood flooring? Wood flooring is susceptible to changes in humidity, causing it to shrink or swell. To minimize this, you should maintain your home's relative humidity (RH) between 30% and 50% and temperature between 60°F and 80°F.

How long does wood flooring last? Solid wood: It can last for 40 to 100 years or more and can be refinished multiple times to extend its life. Engineered wood: Has a shorter lifespan, typically 20 to 40 years. Its life depends on the thickness of the top hardwood veneer, which determines how many times it can be sanded and refinished.
